Google Translate in Massive Open Online Courses: Evaluation of Accuracy and Comprehensibility among Female Users

The increasing production of audiovisual texts online has led to the growing use Machine Translation (MT) in its raw form facilitate multilingual access. In this study, we examine accuracy Google Translate’s English–Arabic subtitles and their comprehensibility among female users through a case analysis Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). We also seek contribute research on MT by providing empirical evidence contexts, which is relatively new under-researched study area. questions considered are: (i) What types errors can be identified translation MOOC subtitles? (ii) effects do machine-translated have users’ comprehension? used mixed-methods approach. First, 147 five videos were annotated six evaluators based error types: mistranslation, terminology, omission, addition, untranslated-segment errors. Second, was examined quasi-experiment. Sixty-two participants divided into two groups. Each group presented with either machine- or human-translated subtitles. Then, completed comprehension test. qualitative showed occurrence all types. quantitative revealed lack statistically significant differences between study’s results suggested that useful facilitating access video content.
